Tegucigalpa, June 19 (PL-RHC) -- The Honduran National Commission for Human Rights (CONADEH) has confirmed that it will appeal to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in an attempt to support thousands of children who are still detained in the United States.

CONADEH will also request the International Red Cross to guarantee a humanitarian treatment to minors.

CONADEH will mediate to avoid an automatic deportation of Honduran minors and teenagers and on the contrary they be given asylum or refugee status in the United States.

"Children have the right to request asylum as long as their parents are able to provide assistance and Consulates and the State protect them in the site of the application," said Roberto Herrera, head of CONADEH. He further highlighted that “the United States has laws and we respect them the same as other countries'; there are fundamental aspects like the ones contained in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights."

Reports from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security indicate that 47,017 minors, mainly from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala, have been arrested on its southern border during the last eight months -- 92 percent higher than the same period in 2013.
