Brazilian judge authorizes investigation of Bolsonaro for corruption in purchase of vaccines

Supreme Federal Court has authorized the opening of an investigation against the president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro

Brasilia, July 3 (RHC)-- In Brazil, Minister Rosa Weber, from the Supreme Federal Court, has authorized the opening of an investigation against the president of Brazil, Jair Bolsonaro, for the alleged crime of embezzlement in the case of the purchase of Covaxin anti-COVID-19 vaccines, by the Ministry of Health.

Judge Weber granted an initial period of 90 days for the investigations against the head of state of the South American giant.  Weber's decision complied with a request made by the Attorney General's Office also presented this Friday to judge the president.

Deputy Attorney General Humberto Jaqcues de Medeiros, who proposed a 90-day deadline to complete the first stage of the investigation, made the request on Friday.  De Medeiros called on the police to request information from the Office of the Comptroller General of the Federation (CGU), the Federal Court of Auditors (TCU), the Federal District Attorney's Office, as well as several witnesses who can provide information to the investigation.

For his part, the Brazilian senator for the state of Rondônia, Marcos Rogerio, reaffirmed his position that all "alleged irregularities should be investigated thoroughly and without selectivity."  "We will investigate allegations in the Ministry of Health, but we cannot turn a blind eye to suspicions of corruption in states and municipalities," he said.

In Brazil, according to Ministry of Health data, there are 65,163 new Covid-19 positive people and 2,029 new deaths from the virus.
