Plurinational strike against corruption resumed in Guatemala

Guatemala City, August 20 (RHC)-- The Indigenous Ancestral Authorities of different territories of Guatemala and civil society organizations carried out another day of protests in the streets of the capital on Thursday -- demanding the resignation of President Alejandro Giammattei and the Attorney General of the Public Ministry (MP), María Consuelo Porras.

According to the protesters, Gianmmattei and Porras represent corruption in Guatemala and structural changes are needed, which includes their respective resignations.  Protesters also pointed out as a concern the human rights violations of the communities they represent, to which they had demanded, in writing, the resignation of the president, but did not receive a response after the deadline expired.

The ancestral authorities expressed their condemnation of the campaign of attacks against the Indigenous peoples, the alternative media and social organizations.   The general secretary of the Association of University Students (AEU), Laura Aguiar, an ally of the Indigenous people in the protests, called on the youth to take to the streets to demonstrate and follow the guidance of the ancestral authorities.

However, Thursday morning dawned with a strong presence of the National Civil Police in different points of the national territory, in the face of which, they maintained their protest.

In the capital itself, human rights organizations denounced that just like the governments of Otto Perez Molina and Jimmy Morales, Alejandro Giammattei resorted to manipulated hordes of a local market to attack the mobilizations demanding his resignation.
