La Paz, February 21 (RHC)-- The Bolivian Minister of Justice, Ivan Lima reported over the weekend that the mission of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCHR) in his country confirmed the state of health of the de facto ex-president Jeanine Áñez.

Lima indicated that the representation of the OHCHR was able to verify the conditions of her hunger strike and noted that so far her decision has been respected by the General Directorate of the Penitentiary Regime.

According to the communiqué issued by the UN agency, the officials of the Miraflores prison where she is being held have allowed the former senator to exercise her legitimate right to peaceful protest.

The UN Mission pointed out that they did not observe any action on the part of the prison authorities of forced feeding or treatment against Jeanine Áñez.

The UNHCHR commented in the text that, in case of an urgent transfer of a person deprived of liberty to a medical center by instruction of a judge, the State is responsible for preserving public order to ensure the safety of that person and to enforce the court order.

Finally, the UN Mission affirmed that they will continue working in coordination with the authorities so that the Bolivian State guarantees the rights of those deprived of liberty, safeguarding their physical and psychological integrity.

Former de facto president Jeanine Áñez began the hunger strike days before the beginning of the oral trial against her for the coup d'état case, an investigation into her unconstitutional seizure of power in 2019.
