Mexico City, February 24 (RHC)-- The president of Mexico, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, called on U.S. Secretary of State, Anthony Blinken, to be informed about the murders of journalists in the Latin American nation and not to act in a meddlesome manner.

During his press conference, the head of state regretted the violent death of seven reporters so far this year and reiterated that authorities are working to find those responsible for each case and that there is no impunity.

The day before, Blinken expressed through Twitter that he joined those calling for greater responsibility and protection for Mexican journalists.  In this regard, AMLO asserted that the U.S. official is not well informed on the issue, as these are not State crimes.

The Mexican leader pointed out that "if (Blinken) intervenes I think he does not know, he is not informed about the situation.  Otherwise, he would be acting in bad faith, because what he is affirming is not true."  He described this position as interference and linked it to a historical practice of the governments of the United States.  He emphasized that "the U.S. has that bad habit of being the lamp in the street and the darkness in the house."

"It is not something new.  We are remembering the interventionism of Ambassador (Henry Lane) Wilson," he pointed out in reference to a Washington representative who intervened in the assassination process of President Francisco I. Madero and Vice President José María Pino Suárez in February 1913.

On February 9, 1913, the Tragic Decade began, which culminated with the assassination of Francisco Madero, orchestrated by the U.S. Ambassador, Henry Lane Wilson.  The triumph of the reaction was facilitated by Madero's conciliatory attitude with the Porfirian oligarchy.

Local media reports that this group, called Mexicans Against Corruption and Impunity (MCCI), constantly publishes articles that try to disqualify the 4T (Fourth Transformation, AMLO's political project) initiated by AMLO's Government.

In López Obrador's opinion, what happened "shows that there is a strong link between conservative groups in Mexico and the Government of the United States," and reminded that his country "is not a colony of the United States, nor is it a protectorate.  It is free, independent and sovereign."
