Brasilia, June 2 (RHC)-- Nearly 8 million Brazilians have been affected by environmental disasters in the first 3 months of 2022.  Brazilian authorities confirmed Wednesday that the death toll in Recife, in the state of Pernambuco after the rains that hit the country rose to 122.

According to media agencies, this report corresponds to the latest body that was to be found in the community of Vila dos Milagres, in Barro, in the West Zone of Recife.

The government of the state of Pernambuco indicated that the number of homeless has increased to 7,312 people, and confirmed that they are in 66 shelters in 27 municipalities.

Nine bodies which arrived at the Institute of Legal Medicine (IML) from various health establishments correspond to people who died as a result of the heavy rains which began on May 25, according to the last report offered by the state agencies.

The first body found this Wednesday in Vila dos Milagres was that of a child whose identity has not yet been determined, and whose body was found under about three meters of earth. The second body was found late in the afternoon, around 5:30 p.m. local time.

The floods in Pernambuco also affected citizens living in makeshift houses supported by sticks.  In April we were in one of these communities showing the fight against hunger.  The same State that does not guarantee food, denies safe housing.

Almost 8 million Brazilians were affected by environmental disasters in the first 3 months of 2022.  In this regard, social organizations denounce the lack of government policies to solve the housing crisis in Brazil.
