Port-au-Prince, July 2 (RHC)-- The Haitian Center for Analysis and Research on Human Rights (Cardh) denounced that between April and June 2022, 326 people were kidnapped in the Caribbean country.
The figure reflects an increase of 44.8 percent over the 225 cases reported in the previous quarter and most have occurred in the metropolitan area of the capital Port-au-Prince.
The report also details that 36 of the victims were foreigners of nine nationalities and that the bandits have carried out 15 collective kidnappings.
In April, 53 acts were registered, 118 in May and 155 in June, despite the incessant activity of the police forces, lacking adequate personnel and means.
The climate of lawlessness and impunity in the continent's most backward country has taken off after the assassination of President Jovenel Moise in July 2021, with an extensive wave of kidnappings, street wars between gangs that control large sectors of Port-au-Prince and the recent extension of the Government to approve a new penal code without the consent of the national parliament.
Cardh affirms that the bandits have diplomatic plates and a car belonging to the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BinuhI), tools they use to commit kidnappings and other criminal acts.
