At least 28 dead due to poisoning with adulterated alcohol in Ecuador

Quito, November 7 (RHC)-- The Ministry of Public Health of Ecuador has reported that the number of deaths due to intoxication after the consumption of methyl alcohol rose to 28.   In a press release, the agency said that 14 deaths were reported in the province of Esmeraldas and the remaining 14 in Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas.

In total, the institution reported that "the number of people intoxicated by adulterated alcohol and who were treated in the facilities of the Ministry of Public Health rises to 85."  In addition, six people remain in critical condition and 28 patients were discharged.

"Epidemiological surveillance and follow-up of new cases of intoxication by adulterated alcohol are being maintained," the agency emphasized.   The Ministry of Public Health again urged the population to avoid consuming alcohol and, if they do, asked them to go to the nearest health center if they have symptoms such as blurred vision, nausea, dizziness or abdominal pain.
