Tegucigalpa, October 5 (RHC)-- The president of Honduras, Xiomara Castro, said Tuesday that the construction of an inter-oceanic railroad to link the Atlantic and Pacific oceans is a project of "national interest".

"I declare in the name of the State, in the national interest to safeguard the public and social interests of the nine million Hondurans, that the inter-oceanic train to link the Atlantic Ocean with the Pacific Ocean is a project of national interest," said the head of state at the ceremony for the anniversary of the birth of the national hero, Francisco Morazán.

According to the president, the plan includes the creation of a transnational company while she pointed out that the United States, among other countries, "have expressed the importance of this project for the development of commercial activities in our region".

"It is a project to promote the economic and social development of the Central American region," she expressed, while assuring that the country needs major development projects.

In this sense, the head of the Central American nation's Executive indicated that "there is no possibility of growing at the pace of the gigantic debt and poverty in which the Honduran population is struggling".

Last July 7, the Government referred for the first time concretely to the project and estimated that the investment should cover about US$20 billion for about 15 years of construction.

During the Honduras-China Joint Trade and Investment Commission, in which the signing of a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) was discussed, Tegucigalpa proposed to Beijing the construction of the project.
