Hundreds of Iranian people were killed because of the US-UK-backed military coup. Mosaddegh was arrested, tried, and convicted of treason by the Shah's military court.     On 21 December 1953, he was sentenced to three years in jail and then placed under house arrest for the rest of his life.

Tehran, August 19 (RHC)-- More than 60 years after the fact, in 2013, the CIA officially acknowledged its involvement in the 1953 military coup in Iran.  Likewise, a declassified document explained how U.S. intelligence agents, together with the British MI6, carried out the operation.

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Naser Kanani recalled this Sunday the 71st anniversary of the coup d'état, orchestrated by the United Kingdom and the United States, which overthrew the government of Mohamed Mosadeq.

“The shame of the overthrow of the democratically elected government of Dr. Mosadegh in Iran through the coup d'état of August 19, 1953, and the political, security and military support for despotism will forever remain on the foreheads of the U.S. and UK regimes,” Kanani said.

Through ‘Operation Ajax,’ they put an end to a figure who was very popular in Iran, but opposed to London due to his historic decision to nationalize the Iranian oil industry.

The coup restored Iran's last monarch, Mohamed Reza Pahlavi, to power and left dozens of Iranian citizens dead.  According to Kanai, “slavery, colonialism, coups and military interventions in other countries are just part of the dark and shameful history of US and UK interference in the world.”

In this regard, he questioned that both nations proclaim themselves defenders of democracy.  “These same two countries, with such a dark history, are now also supporting the false and racist regime of Israel and the genocide in Gaza in an unlimited way, and at the same time consider themselves standard-bearers of human rights and democracy!” he denounced.
