Algiers, September 9 (RHC)-- The head of the Independent National Electoral Authority of Algeria, Mohamed Sharafi, announced this Sunday the provisional results of the pre-presidential elections held the day before, in which the current president, Abdelmadjid Tebboune, was re-elected for a new term.
During a press conference, Sharafi said that Tebboune obtained 5,329,253 votes, 94.65 percent of the valid votes cast in the ballot boxes. Following were Abdelaali Hassani (Peace Society Movement, with 3.17 percent of the votes, and Youcef Aouchiche (Front of Socialist Forces, FFS), with 2.16 percent.
According to the Independent National Electoral Authority, the three candidates obtained 5,630,196 votes, adding the votes inside and outside the North African country.
On Saturday, Sharafi detailed that popular participation was around 48 percent of eligible voters, a figure that exceeded by 9 percent the turnout at the polls obtained in the 2019 elections, considered the lowest in the country's history.
During the electoral campaign, Tebboune focused his speech on economic policy to improve salaries and pensions, an increase in public investment, actions to support young people and vulnerable groups, the construction of two million new homes and the generation of more than 10 million new jobs. 400,000 jobs.
In foreign policy, he ratified the traditional Algerian support for the Palestinian cause and rejected the genocide committed by the Zionist occupation in Gaza and the West Bank. He also expressed his support for the cause of the Sahrawi people.
After the results were known, Tebboune received congratulatory calls from leaders of various nations, including the president of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA), Mahmoud Abbas, Turkish president, Tayyip Recep Erdogan, the emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, and the president of Tunisia, Kais Saied, among others.
They all wished the re-elected president and the Algerian people new successes during Tebboune's upcoming administration and progress in bilateral relations. He was also congratulated by the country's largest party, the National Liberation Front (FLN). In a statement, the political party said that the number of votes obtained by the candidate confirms the respect and trust that the Algerian people have for him.
At the same time, it highlighted the tranquility of the electoral process and the civility of the Algerian people, whose level of awareness will allow them to overcome "the machinations and conspiracies that are being hatched against our country, responding forcefully to those who were betting on the failure of the presidential elections."
