Venezuela makes all its capacities available to Colombia “to address this emergency situation.”
Caracas, November 13 (RHC)-- The Government of Venezuela has announced that the South American country “is ready to provide the necessary help that Colombia requires,” in the face of the emergency unleashed by the major floods that affected 27 of its 32 departments.
“Following instructions from President Nicolás Maduro Moros, we are transmitting a message of solidarity to the Colombian government and people, in the face of the emergency caused by the climate situation, mainly in Alta Guajira, El Chocó and Bogotá,” wrote Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yván Gil on his social networks.
In this regard, he indicated that Venezuela is making all its capabilities available to Colombia “to deal with this emergency situation.”
Last Sunday, Colombian President Gustavo Petro declared a natural disaster in Colombia, “due to the climate variability that generates unpredictable and unusual impacts, increasing vulnerability in the territories.”
In his speech, the president stressed that this climate vulnerability is aggravated by impacts related to deforestation, illicit economies and the uncontrolled urbanization of the Bogotá savannah (capital).
The Colombian government's measure is intended to address emergencies by transferring budgets from entities in the country not linked to disaster relief to sites that have been victims of the climate situation.
According to preliminary data, in the department of Chocó, in the northwest of Colombia, some 30,000 families have been affected by the rains.
