Brasilia, December 9 (RHC)-- The Popular Brazil and People Without Fear movements have called for protests in at least 18 states, in addition to the Federal District, tomorrow, Tuesday, to demand the arrest of Jair Bolsonaro and 36 other people accused by the Federal Police (PF) of attempted coup d'état, which occurred in 2022.
The marches were called after a breach of confidentiality was announced in the PF investigation into the 2022 coup attempt. According to the police report, former President Jair Bolsonaro and his allies at the top of the government were accused last Thursday, November 21, by the PF of attempted violent abolition of the democratic rule of law, coup d'état and criminal organization.
This accusation is part of the attempted coup d'état in Brazil in 2022, to prevent the inauguration of Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva as President of the Republic, after his victory against Bolsonaro at the polls in November of that year.
Among the 37 accused by the PF, the majority are military personnel. Also on the list are Walter Braga Netto, former Minister of Defense of Brazil; Augusto Heleno, former Minister Chief of the Institutional Security Cabinet of the Presidency; Alexandre Ramagem, former director of the Brazilian Intelligence Agency; and Valdemar Costa Neto, president of the Liberal Party.
Regarding the event that occurred two years ago, Paulista Foundation researcher Marcos Napolitano explained: “The coup plotters had reasonable support in society, but no institutional support in the Armed Forces, organized political groups, the press and Parliament, so it had little chance of success. However, that does not diminish the seriousness of the crime committed against democracy by civilian and military leaders between 2022 and early 2023.”
The demands of the protests focus on the trial and arrest of all those involved in the case, the end of the 6-to-1 work schedule, the appreciation of the minimum wage and pensions, the annulment of the “Anti-Rape Bill,” the imposition of taxes on the rich and the end of the genocide against the Black population.
