Lima, November 25 (ANDINA-RHC)-- Over 1,000 volunteers including members of rural communities trekked up a region of highlands in Peru to plant trees as a concrete gesture to support climate change initiatives ahead of COP20 summit to be held December in Peru.

The planting was held in La Oroya, in the district of Pacca, Junin, Peru’s central highlands, under the slogan "Siembra Montes' (Planting Forest Trees). The activity was part of the Forest Week, organized by NGO Vida, the town's Municipal Environmental Committee and other authorities.

"It is important that authorities, communities and people from La Oroya commit themselves to this kind of activities, which help to improve life's quality and mitigates the effects of climate change in the high Andean zone of Peru," said Arturo Alfaro, president of Vida NGO.

Alfaro said: "Since Peru will be hosting COP20, we must demonstrate we are committed with the environmental care by reducing gas emissions, which cause global warming."
