San Juan, January 6 (RHC-teleSUR) -- The National Boricua Human Rights Network and La Respuesta Magazine have organized a worldwide campaign to call for the liberation of Oscar Lopez Rivera.
The campaign, "Birth of a Patriot, Star of a Nation," calls for 100,000 messages to the official twitter accounts of U.S. President Barack Obama, the White House and U.S. Justice Department: @BarackObama and @TheJusticeDept.
Oscar Lopez Rivera is Puerto Rico's longest-held political prisoner and has endured 33 years in prison. Lopez Rivera is a strong advocate for the Caribbean nation's liberation and a community organizer.
The action is taking place on Lopez Rivera's birthday, today, January 6th. Participants in the campaign are also asked to record videos, share art and send other creative messages to demand the release of Lopez. The campaign's official hashtags include: #FreeOscarLopez and #Gift4Oscar (#RegaloPaOscar for Spanish-language messages).
Over the weekend, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro offered an exchange of right-wing opposition leader Leopoldo Lopez for the release of Lopez Rivera. Uruguayan President Jose 'Pepe' Mujica also requested the release of Lopez Rivera in an open letter to U.S. President Barack Obama.
