United Nations, February 24 (RHC-teleSUR) -- Venezuelan Foreign Minister Delcy Rodriguez denounced foreign interference and the economic war being waged on Venezuela during her presentation Monday at the United Nations Security Council.

Before taking a seat during the special session of the Security Council, Rodriguez tweeted, “We are going to bring the voice of Venezuela and Latin America and the Caribbean in defense of International Law and the sovereignty of peoples!”

The government of President Nicolas Maduro has been the subject of criticism from private media outlets, which have attempted to portray Venezuela as a violent and unstable country. During her speech at the Security Council, Foreign Minister Rodriguez answered those claims directly, saying that Venezuela is a country that seeks peaceful resolutions to conflict.

President Maduro has also denounced what he calls an “economic war” against his country, which is attempting to undermine his democratically-elected government.

Rodriguez also criticized global military expenditures and condemned the fact that in the 21st century there remains racial discrimination. She also backed Palestine's bid to become a full member state of the United Nations.

Venezuela won a seat on the security council in late 2014 and took its place at the beginning of this year. After winning the seat with 181 votes, Rafael Ramirez, Venezuela's permanent representative to the United Nations, said, “The historic success of Venezuela shows clearly the wide support that our revolution has internationally, as a supporter of peace, social justice, solidarity, and respect of human rights."
