U.S. Special Envoy Meets Colombian Peace Talk Negotiators

Havana, March 2 (teleSUR-RHC)-- The recently-appointed U.S. Special Envoy to the Colombian peace talks met with Colombian government and Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia officials for the first time Sunday.

“They were very private meetings," a Colombian official told Reuters, declining to reveal what was discussed or how long they took place.

President Barack Obama named veteran diplomat Bernard Aronson as special envoy to the ongoing Colombia peace talks on February 20th. The peace negotiations began just over two years ago in a bid to end the more than 50-year internal conflict that has left over 220,000 dead and over six million victims of displacement and other crimes and violations.

So far, agreements have been reached on three of the five agenda points at the peace talks, including land reform, an end to the illegal drug trade and political participation for the FARC guerrillas.

The reparations to victims of the conflict remains one of two outstanding issues needing to be resolved in order to reach a
