Guatemala City, March 4 (teleSUR-RHC)-- On Tuesday, U.S. Vice President Joe Biden concluded a two-day trip to Guatemala aimed at curbing Central American migration to the United States.

Biden held meetings with Central American presidents Salvador Sanchez Ceren of El Salvador, Juan Orlando Hernandez from Honduras and Guatemalan host Otto Perez Molina as a follow up to meetings in Washington in November 2014.

During the discussions, the three Central American leaders told Biden they would implement reforms on security and other areas to improve the lives of people in the region and stem historic levels of people fleeing the region, many of whom make the perilous attempt to enter the United States illegally.

Meanwhile, Biden called for a strengthening of the U.N. International Commission against Impunity in Guatemala (CICIG) to give more support to the countries of the region.

“It is a sovereign decision, but must be extended if someone expects the U.S. Congress to join the initiative making commitments of billions of dollars,” the U.S. leader said.
