Santiago de Chile, November 26 (PL-RHC)-- The Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean (ECLAC) denounced that at least 1,678 women were killed in 2014 in countries of the region, regarding the international campaign on the issue.

On the occasion of International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, ECLAC executive secretary, Alicia Barcena, called regional countries to improve their administrative records, to learn the current number of femicides.

She also spoke out for boosting programs on prevention and reparation of the victims with adequate budgets, while described as unacceptable that "most Latin American and Caribbean women merely die because they are women."

According to official data from the Gender Equality Observatory of Latin America and the Caribbean, known female crimes took place in 17 countries.

ECLAC stated in its analysis that femicide is the most dramatic expression of violence against women, which should be fully faced by the States.

She said that about 20 regional countries currently have laws on violence against women, although only eight allocate specific resources in the national budget, that is, 40 percent.

She finally announced that the confrontation of violence will be one of the main issues of the 13th Regional Conference on Women of Latin America and the Caribbean of ECLAC, to be run in 2016 in Montevideo.
