Havana, February 9 (RHC)-- The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia-People's Army (FARC-EP) has expressed its strong rejection of a proposal by the government of President Juan Manuel Santos to hold a plebiscite for the Colombian people to approve or reject a definite peace agreement once it is signed by the belligerent parties.

In an open letter disclosed in Havana on Monday and addressed to the Colombian government, FARC-EP insisted that the initiative is neither the best political mechanism nor the appropriate legal instrument to validate the end of the armed conflict in the South American nation.

Upon calling the government's unilateral decision a gross mistake, the rebel group noted that under Colombian law, the country's constitution could only be modified by Congress, a Constituent Assembly or the Colombian people through a referendum.
