Havana, May 10 (RHC-ACN)-- In Cuba almost 80 percent of children with leukemia have been cured, said Dr. Sergio Machín, 2nd Degree specialist in Hematology. He noted that leukemia is the most common type of cancer in childhood worldwide.

In statements to Cuban press, Dr. Machín said that the country's results in the treatment of the disease are comparable with those of developed nations.

The Cuban expert further explained that the country registers 80 new cases of leukemia on average every year, 75 percent of which are acute lymphoid leukemia (ALL) --the most frequent among children. He added that all Cuban patients are guaranteed full access to free high-quality treatment to cure the ailment, including last generation chemotherapies.

Dr. Machin is participating in the Hematology 2017 Congress, which runs at Havana's Convention Center until Friday with the participation of experts from 30 countries. 

Cuba has a national network for the treatment of malignant hematological diseases in children. It consists of seven specialized centers, two in Havana and the others in Pinar del Río, Villa Clara, Camagüey, Holguín and Santiago de Cuba.
