Havana, April 5 (RHC)— The director general of the Latin American and Caribbean Desk of Cuba´s Foreign Ministry says the decision by the Brazilian Supreme Federal Court to deny the preventive Habeas Corpus requested by the defense of former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva is a new expression of the long and unjust campaign against the founder of the Workers Party.
In a statement to the press, Eugenio Martinez Enriquez said that the decision is also part of the efforts of the Brazilian conservative forces against the left and the Workers Party, in an effort to prevent them from winning the October elections.
The diplomat added that the decision opens the way to the possible and imminent arrest of Lula, an act that he described as very grave.
Martinez Enriquez recalled that Lula continues to enjoy broad popular support, sympathy and international recognition, as a result of the successes achieved under his administrations that benefited the great majority of Brazilian citizens.
“Today the majority of Brazilians are being deprived of its right to elect him again as their president, opening the way to a neoliberal wave and a reversal of the conquests of PT administrations,” he said,
Eugenio Martinez Enriquez concluded his remarks reiterating Cuba´s solidarity and support to Lula.
Meanwhile, Federal Judge Sergio Moro wasted no time and issued an arrest warrant and said that Lula has until 5pm Friday to present himself on his own will at the Federal Police in Curitiba.
