Villa Clara, March 24th (RHC) In the area of the Turquino Bamburanao Plan, in the Cuban eastern province of Villa Clara, no maternal deaths have been reported for six consecutive years.

According to Justo Rodriguez, who heads the maternal- infant program, the achievement is due to the joint work of the primary attention system and the Basic Work Group, which is made up of a general practicioner, a pediatrician and an obstetrician.

Rodriguez pointed out that the actions taken by the specialists in the early detection of pregnancies, have contributed to decreasing risk factors and ultimately mortality.

In 2013 Villa Clara registered a maternal mortality rate of 11.6 per 100 000 deliveries; which is below the national rate. Likewise, the province reduced the number of the stillborn due to congenital defects to 0.7 per each 1000 deliveries; these figure correlate with levels in more develped nations.
