UN System agencies support Cuba’s preparedness to face earthquakes

Santiago de Cuba, September 7 (RHC)--  United Nations System agencies represented in Cuba  expressed their willingness to continue accompanying the country in its efforts to get ready for the possible occurrence of an earthquake of great magnitude.

Representatives of the UN institutions voiced their commitment in the eastern city of Santiago de Cuba during a workshop on the strengthening of the capacities of preparation and response to these natural phenomena.

The event was sponsored by the National General Staff of the island’s Civil Defense, the United Nations Development Programs and the World Food Program.

The Pan American Health Organization, the International Organization for Migration, UN-Habitat and the Population Fund also expressed their support, and shared their experiences on recovery efforts from natural disasters in different latitudes and in particular following frequent hurricanes in Cuban provinces.

Civil Defense Chief, Major General Ramón Pardo, highlighted the lessons learned during the workshop and its convenience in the face of sudden events such as earthquakes, in addition to thanking the collaboration in these efforts to safeguard lives and resources.
