Faure Chomón, Commander of the Rebel Army, dies in Havana at 90

Havana, December 6 (RHC)-- Prominent revolutionary fighter Faure Chomon Mediavilla died on Thursday in Havana of a multiorgan dysfunction syndrome, local media outlets reported.  He was 90 years old.

Chomon was born on January 15, 1929 in Manatí, in the former Oriente province. From an early age, he participated in revolutionary activities against the governments of the day and the Batista dictatorship.

He took part in the attack on the Presidential Palace on March 13, 1957.  In 1958, he landed heading an expedition through the Nuevitas area and founded the Escambray Guerrilla Front until becoming part of Las Villas Front under the orders of Commander Ernesto Guevara. He was promoted to Commander of the Rebel Army.

After the triumph of January 1, 1959, he held numerous political and governmental responsibilities, among them, Ambassador of Cuba to the former Soviet Union; Minister of Communications and Transport; First Secretary of the Provincial Committee of the Party in Las Tunas province, and advisor to the President of the National Assembly of People's Power.

Faure stood out for his humbleness, for his absolute loyalty to Fidel and Raúl, his permanent defense of unity among revolutionaries and his consecration, until his last breath, to the tasks entrusted to him by the Revolution.

By decision of his family, his body will be cremated and a posthumous homage is to be held at a later date to be announced.
