Sancti Spíritus, May 31 (RHC)-- Residents of the fourth village established in Cuba -- Sancti Spíritus, located in central Cuba -- are getting ready to celebrate at home the 506th anniversary of its founding on June 4th, while intensifying the fight against COVID-19.
The main symbols of the city, the Parroquial Mayor, the bridge of the Yayabo River and the Teatro Principal are being presented on the different digital platforms and in the homes in the virtual exchange, accompanied by music, theater, books, paintings and photographs.
The affection of the people of the spirit for their city is evident when, as they pass through the streets, they hear the chords of a guitar, the voices of the Clave Choir, the güiro and the cowbell, and they hear the humming of the song Pensamiento (Thought), created a little over a century ago by Rafael Gómez Mayea (Teofilito).
Sancti Spiritus -- located some 360 kilometers from Havana, the Cuban capital -- treasures one of the island's most original historical centers, where the Parroquial Mayor or Temple of the Holy Spirit is located, built in the early 16th century on a small hill north of Yayabo.
Another colonial jewel is the five-arch bridge, unique in Cuba, with a structure of brick, lime and sand. It is said that cow's milk was used as the binding element for the mixture, while others claim that it came from donkeys.
It is a National Monument, more than nine meters high and it is approximately 85 meters long. It was inaugurated on July 12, 1825.
