Havana, July 5 (RHC)-- The President of the Republic of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, sent a message of congratulations and recognition to the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) on Sunday, on the occasion of its 47th anniversary.

"Our congratulations and recognition to the sister Caribbean nations," wrote the president in a message on his official Twitter account, which is accompanied by a text published by the Cubadebate portal, with emphasis on regional efforts to control the COVID-19.

In a message before that date, the Secretary General of the regional bloc, Irwin LaRocque, recognized today the capacity of resistance of the people in the face of the pandemic, while regretting the loss of life.

LaRocque highlighted the integration of Caribbean institutions that enabled effective management against this disease, by implementing policies and programs agreed upon by the heads of government and the various ministerial councils.

In his message, LaRocque also called for maintaining the spirit of unity and determination to build a safe and prosperous community for the benefit of its citizens, and insisted on the need to reflect on the contribution of each person in the intention of preserving the pillars of Caricom and contributing to the reactivation of the regional economy.

The Caribbean Community was created on July 4, 1973, with the signing of the Treaty of Chaguaramas, Trinidad and Tobago, to transform the Caribbean Free Trade Association into a Common Market, reported Prensa Latina news agency when highlighting the event.

The group is made up of 15 member states and five associates from The Bahamas in the north to Surinam and Guyana in South America, with great diversity in their levels of economic and social development. (Source: ACN).
