Havana, August 19 (RHC)-- President of the National Assembly of People's Power (ANPP) Esteban Lazo Hernández is leading the Cuban delegation to the first part of the Fifth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, which is being held virtually this Wednesday and Thursday.

The event is organized by the Inter-Parliamentary Union with the cooperation of the Austrian Parliament and the United Nations to "mobilize the international parliamentary community to act on the health, climate and economic crises that the peoples and the planet must face.

More than 150 presidents of Parliaments, other legislators, experts and UN representatives are participating in the event.

Various events, panels and reports serve as the basis for distance discussions that include the adoption of a final declaration on parliaments mobilized for more effective multilateralism in the service of peace and sustainable development.

These meetings are convened every five years and on this occasion it was agreed to postpone, because of the COVID-19, and to hold the second part next year 2021 in Vienna, Austria, in its usual face-to-face forum.

Among the topics to be discussed in the interactive debate are health, climate and economy; combating terrorism and violent extremism; and science and technology.

The Cuban delegation also includes Ana María Mari Machado, Vice President of the ANPP, Yolanda Ferrer Gómez and José Luis Toledo Santander, who head the International Relations and Constitutional and Legal Affairs Commissions, respectively; Jesús Rafael Mora, official, and Loipa Sánchez Lorenzo, Cuban Ambassador to Austria.
