Camaguey, May 26 (RHC) –- Africa Day was celebrated over the weekend by students of that continent who are here in Cuba on scholarships granted by the Cuban government.

Sponsored by the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP), the main celebration took part in Camaguey province with the participation of African students, who are enrolled in some 15 different university careers in the eastern Cuban city, declared a world heritage site by UNESCO.

Africa Day is the annual commemoration of the founding of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) on May 25, 1963.

Saido Danso, a student from Guinea Bissau thanked the Cuban people and their Revolution for their contribution to the liberation of several African nations, as well as for the island's cooperation, particularly the scholarships program.

Danso reiterated the African peoples' strong rejection of the U.S. blockade against Cuba and their demand for the immediate release of the three anti-terrorist fighters, Gerardo Hernández, Antonio Guerrero and Ramón Labañino -- members of the Cuban Five group -- who are still unjustly held in U.S. prisons.
