Beijing, October 13 (RHC)-- Cuba urged at the World Summit on Biodiversity (COP 15) to stop the destruction of the environment caused by irrational production and consumption patterns after warning about the threats to the planet and human life.
Speaking by video link at the event, held in China, the head of the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Environment (CITMA), Elba Rosa Pérez, said that rescuing biological diversity is a challenge for developing countries since they are forced to allocate their limited resources to face the crisis aggravated by the Covid-19 pandemic.
According to the Minister, the impact is more significant in territories subject to coercive measures imposed by other governments, unilaterally and without political reason.
She added that Cuba has among its priorities the protection of biodiversity, the sustainable use of ecosystems, and the confrontation of climate change.
In this programmatic context, we see nature-based solutions as efficient alternatives to protect, sustainably manage, restore damaged ecosystems and promote climate action,' the minister said.
Pérez referred to the importance for Cuba of adopting a new strategic framework to guide its work in the coming years.
She stressed that this initiative should include a funding target to ensure its effectiveness and implementation and define by May 2022 the commitments and deadlines for delivery, mainly by developed countries.
COP15 has been in session since Monday in the southwestern city of Kunming, intending to shape the global agenda and the goals to be achieved by 2030.
