Havana, Sep 29(RHC) Cuban Vice President Salvador Valdes Mesa called on Wednesday for working hard to restore the damage caused by Hurricane Ian in western Cuba.

The also member of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of Cuba, toured territories in the province of Mayabeque, one of the main suppliers of food to the capital, severely damaged by the storm which caused significant losses in agriculture.

Among other damages, some 1,500 hectares of crops were reported to have been affected in that region, with the greatest damage to banana, corn, and tomato crops.  As part of the recovery process, the products ready to be consumed by the population were harvested.

In a meeting with producers, Valdés Mesa recommended the development of short-cycle crops to replace the crops damaged by the meteorological phenomenon and called for the deployment of a broad mobilization in these tasks.

He also inquired about the situation of the province's water reservoirs, although they are still at 47 percent capacity.

He also visited Caimito beach, where the sea penetrated about two kilometers inland, forcing the evacuation of all the inhabitants.

Given this phenomenon, he considered it necessary to relocate the families in places far from the sea, given the possibility of water penetrations due to similar phenomenon, and only to reside there temporarily in the summer or the dry season.

On this day, work was being done to repair the damage caused by coastal flooding, which is becoming more and more intense due to climate change and it is turning into a serious problem for this type of settlement (Source: Prensa Latina).
