French organization recognized diversity of future Cuban Parliament

Havana, March 30 (RHC) The Cuba Coopération France association (CubaCoop) recognized today the presence of women and young people among the 470 deputies elected on the island for the Tenth Legislature of the National Assembly, which will be installed on April 19.

In its weekly publication La lettre électronique Hebdo, the organization created in 1995 highlighted that 55 percent of the seats will be occupied by women, two points more than in the previous Legislature, which confirms the Antillean nation among the countries with the highest female participation in the parliamentary sphere. Regarding young people (under 35 years of age), they will represent two out of 10 deputies, elected in the national elections last Sunday.

According to the information circulated by CubaCoop to its thousands of subscribers, the democratic process was a success, considering citizen participation and the difficult economic context that the island is experiencing, marked by the daily impact of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed on it by the United States.

The French association, involved in the last two decades in various decentralized cooperation projects, estimated that media silence around such an important moment of Cuban democracy is not surprising.

“This was the sixth time in six years that the people have voted. The most recent of them to approve was the new Family Code by referendum. It is not in all countries that voters are asked for their opinion on a new law before it enters into force," the association added in its publication.

Likewise, it announced that the next stage will take place on April 19, with the constitution of the National Assembly of People's Power and the election of its presidency, the rest of the members of the Council of State and the positions of president and vice president of the Republic.
