Natural site in Sancti Spiritus nominated for the Conservation Award
Havana, Cuba, Apr 7 (RHC) The Sierra de las Damas natural site, located in the central Cuban province of Sancti Spiritus, stands out today for its biodiversity, archaeological and historical values, and for being nominated for the National Conservation Award.
The Sierra de Las Damas Conservation Base Business Unit, belonging to the Flora and Fauna Sancti Spiritus Company, is in charge of preserving this place that combines landscaping with its attractions.
In this mountain range is the place where Major General Serafín Sánchez Valdivia, Hero of the Three Wars of Independence against Spanish colonialism, fell in combat on November 18, 1896.
The Manuel Romero Falcó Archeology Office, of the Office of the Conservator of the City of Sancti Spíritus, continues the excavations in that environment, adding new collections to the patrimonial fund.
According to data consulted, the aforementioned Cabinet developed the project Combate Paso de Las Damas. Archaeological study of the Battlefield, and since May 2021 investigations have been carried out there.
Anait Gómez, director of the Provincial Center for Cultural Heritage, explained that the aforementioned area represents the province among the country's proposals for the National Prize for Conservation and Restoration of Monuments, in the first section.
The City Historian, María Antonieta Jiménez, indicates in one of her texts that the Sierra de las Damas natural site has a territorial extension of 120 hectares. “Its geological, geomorphological, carsological and speleological formations are unique in the territory, since they have varied terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems”, the expert points out.
The Prize for the Conservation and Restoration of Monuments, sponsored by the National Council of Cultural Heritage, encourages those who are in charge of the protection and rescue of monumental works and the built, historical and natural heritage of Cuba.
The awards will be delivered on April 18, the date on which the International Day of Monuments and Sites is celebrated each year, while national media announced the nominees in both categories. (Source: Prensa Latina)
