Lebanese hold chess game in solidarity with Cuba

 

Havana, April 17 (RHC) - Young people and adults, regulars at the Chess Room in the Shatila Palestinian camp, in Beirut, staged a tournament on the occasion of the 62nd anniversary of the victory at Playa Girón to express solidarity, friendship and support for the Cuban people.

At the event, the head of the Havana mission in Beirut, Jorge León, shared with the chess players and motivated them to study the work of world champion José Raúl Capablanca to learn about his achievements, learn from his games and style of play.

During the activity also in tribute to the proclamation of the socialist character of the Cuban Revolution, León highlighted the courage of the people who defeated in less than 72 hours the invasion carried out by mercenary troops prepared and financed by the United States in April 1961.

Prior to the start of the games, friendly voices highlighted the example of Cuba for the free peoples of the world and its support for the independence, sovereignty and liberation of Palestine.

At the same time, those present exalted the historical ties between Palestinians and Cubans and expressed their condemnation of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by Washington on the island for more than 60 years.

The diplomat moved the first piece to open the contest with victory for Ahmad Al Asasi, escorted by Mohamad Nafaa and Ibrahim Monsour, second and third places, respectively.

The Girón Victory Cup, organized in Beirut by the League of Palestinian Graduates in Cuban Institutes and Universities and the Shatila Chess Room, summoned 10 players, under the watchful eye of international judge Mahmoud Kashlu.

On Wednesday, Cuba will commemorate 62 years of the military victory over a mercenary invading force, which was the first major defeat of US imperialism in Latin America. (Source: Prensa Latina)
