Prize awarded in Spain to ELAM from Cuba
Havana, Apr 28 (RHC) - The Association of Peace and Solidarity of Workers' Commissions (CCOO) of Asturias, awarded the 2nd International Prize to the Latin American School of Medicine (ELAM) of Cuba.
The award was delivered in the Asturian town of Avilés, northern Spain, at the History Museum.
The CCOO indicated that the creation of the award is made in recognition and support of a non-profit entity, whose trajectory supports a commitment to international cooperation and carries out actions aimed at reducing inequalities, defending labor human rights and the construction of peace and global justice.
In the case of ELAM, the award was given "for their work to train doctors from more than one hundred countries free of charge to later create or continue Health Programs in their respective countries."
ELAM rector Yoandra Muro Valle received the distinction from the president of the Peace and Solidarity Association, Professor Ana Mari García, and the general secretary of the CCOO union of Asturias, José Manuel Zapico.
Muro commented that the creation of this institution was Fidel Castro’s idea, gestated from hurricanes Mitch and George that devastated Central America. She added that 23 years later, ELAM has grown in prestige and number of countries where its students come from, and from which they are asked to return to their nations to practice medicine at the service of the communities.
The event was part of the Avilés cultural week, on the threshold of May 1, which was referenced by several ELAM students who went online for the occasion. Previously, Rector Muro met with Asturian groups such as the Spanish-Cuban Peace and Friendship Association, Cien por Cien Cubano or Awon Iyaami, and with the mayoress of Avilés, whom she thanked for the solidarity received by her people.
