On September 5, 1957, a joint popular uprising of sailors and civilians maintained for almost 24 hours the control of the city of Cienfuegos, to become a paradigm of urban struggle in Cuba.

At the time of the events, the guerrilla enclave had not yet reached its full maturity, hence the leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro considered that the Cienfuegos uprising "meant an extraordinary moral encouragement for the fighters of the Sierra Maestra."   (Source: Prensa Latina)
