Air Europa will fly to Cuba with biofuel

Havana, Sep 12 (RHC) A note from professor and Cuban tourism specialist José Luis Perelló, states that the Spanish airline Air Europa will operate flights with sustainable fuel (SAF) on trips that include Havana.

In his Facebook account, Perelló explains that these are long-haul routes that will initially link the airline with the Madrid Barajas International Airport and the Havana International Airport once a month with biofuel, which will allow it to save 50 tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions on one year.

The company Cepsa will supply 14.4 tons of SAF to Air Europa for one year, which will help the airline meet the objectives set by the European Union (EU) in the ReFuelEU Aviation initiative.

The European Union projects that European airlines will increasingly implement sustainable fuels so that in 2025 they will incorporate two to six percent by 2030, and 70 percent by 2050.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) assumes that SAF will contribute 65 percent of the emissions reductions aviation needs to achieve net zero by 2050.

Air Europa increased its transatlantic market share between Madrid and America in the last four years by 2.4 percent between the first half of 2019 and 2023, where it reached 22.9 percent, according to data from the consulting firm Aena.
