Cuba satisfied with the development of the G77 Summit

Havana, Sept 15 (RHC) Cuba is satisfied with the broad participation of delegations from all continents in the Summit of the Group of 77 that is meeting this Friday and Saturday in Havana, diplomatic sources reported.

The general director of Multilateral Affairs and International Law of the Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Rodolfo Benítez, explained to the press that the event was inaugurated with the presence of 114 countries, according to preliminary figures. He stressed that so far a hundred delegations have registered on the lists of speakers for the Summit, which demonstrates the high interest in participating and speaking.

He said that the debate in the plenary session has been very deep and substantive, which, in his opinion, is a reflection of the very high level of political awareness of the Group's membership.

Benítez commented that there is agreement on the need to undertake an urgent and profound reform of the current archaic international financial architecture so that it is truly representative and addresses the legitimate claims of developing countries.

He reported that a large number of proposals were made during the debate, including renewing the science, technology and innovation consortium for the south, which will allow promoting joint research projects and fostering productive chains that reduce dependence on Western markets.

It was also proposed the promotion of dialogue between scientific organizations in the south and the reinforcement of the codes and guidelines of the scientific and technological community, as well as create technological platforms in different spheres including health, environment, food safety, among others.

Another of the proposals of the members of the Group was to advance in the articulation of a network of universities and research centers that strengthens the exchange of knowledge between the members of the G77.

Declaring tomorrow, September 16, as the Day of Science, Technology and Innovation in the South was another of the proposals that was widely accepted.

On behalf of the Cuban people and Government, the diplomat thanked the numerous delegations that expressed their rejection of the criminal economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the United States. (Source: PL)
