Havana, March 2 (RHC) -- Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba and President of the Republic, lamented on Friday the death on February 29 of Ali Hassan Mwinyi, former President of Tanzania, at the age of 98.

From his account in X, the president expressed his sorrow at the death of Mwinyi, who maintained a great friendship with Cuba.

In his message on the social network, Díaz-Canel expressed his heartfelt condolences to the people and government of Tanzania, which he extended to Mwinyi's family and friends.

"With sorrow we learned of the passing of former Tanzanian President Ali Hassan Mwinyi, who maintained a great friendship with #Cuba. My heartfelt condolences to the people and Government of #Tanzania, extended to his family and friends."

Ali Hassan Mwinyi, who led the country between 1985 and 1995, died Thursday at the Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania's economic capital where he was being treated for lung cancer.
