Cuba will host Important regional tourism meeting

Havana, March 15 (RHC) The Cuban resort of Varadero, in the province of Matanzas, will host an important event in the travel sector, as reported today by the Regional Director for the Americas of UN Tourism, Gustavo Santos.

During an interview with the European publication Travel Trade Caribbean (TTC), Santos reported that the 69th Meeting of the Regional Commission for the Americas (CAM) and the seminar Promoting tourism development through innovation in tourism will take place in Varadero on April 29 and 30.

He pointed out that the event corresponds to the meeting of the Regional Commission for the Americas of UN Tourism, when they expect to meet the representatives of the 26 countries that make up the region and the two Associate Members, as well as representatives of the private sector.

He said that although it is a statutory meeting, it is time to work on the identified priorities related to connectivity, sustainability, empowerment of women and youth, and development of products such as gastronomy or rural tourism.

During the meeting, the second Amadeus report on Travel Trends in 2024 in the Americas region will be presented.

According to the director, the seminar Promoting tourism development through innovation in tourism will be an opportunity to learn about good practices in terms of innovation and investments in local communities, human capital, biodiversity and infrastructure. It will also allow to look for sustainable alternatives to strengthen community tourism and entrepreneurship for the development of tourist experiences.

He explained that Cuba particularly offers a wonderful sea to enjoy all year round, colonial cities with unique charm, a capital whose historic center is a World Heritage Site, in addition to the warmth and friendliness of their people.

He pointed out that the region of the Americas is potentially one of the regions that can grow the most in tourism in the coming years, and noted that the region needs to be better connected. In this sense, it is essential to work to consolidate an air-commercial connectivity network, ensuring that more airlines and frequencies link destinations.

In this sense, in association with The International Air Transport Association (IATA), they seek to promote the improvement of connectivity in the region and the expansion of routes to promote multi-destination tourism and intraregional circulation.

Furthermore, the establishment of the Regional Office for the Americas of the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, will focus on reinforcing investment promotion, especially by promoting green investments and developing a strategy around to education and training, especially of young people.

The UN official assured that they have already achieved several objectives, such as the creation of the First Tourism Law Observatory of Latin America and the Caribbean of the UNWTO.

With the support of the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean (CAF), they also develop the Tourism Investment Guides, which are documents indicating the opportunities and incentives. So far, investment guides from the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, Paraguay and Uruguay have been presented, and they are working on theirs with Cuba, as well as with Peru, Honduras and El Salvador.
