UN independent expert conducts academic visit to Cuba

Havana, April 29 (RHC) The independent expert of the Human Rights Council on the consequences of External Debt, Attiya Waris, is visiting Cuba to attend the Congress on the New International Economic Order that begins in Havana today.

Waris will develop an intense program that includes meetings with various authorities and institutions of the country.

According to Cuban Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the expert will be able to verify the negative impact of foreign debt and the blockade on the enjoyment of human rights by Cubans.

She will also meet with representatives of civil society to share experiences, good practices and lessons learned about the protection of human rights in Cuba, and in particular how the external debt affects them.

Waris' visit to the island is part of the cooperation that Cuba develops with the human rights machinery of the United Nations and its institutions of universal and non-discriminatory application.

The Second International Congress on the need for a New International Economic Order has the purpose of promoting dialogue around the problems that hinder development and world peace, as a consequence of an unbalanced international economic, political, scientific-technological and military order.
