Havana, October 3 (RHC)-- A total of 32,848 divorces were registered in Cuba in 2013, according to figures published by the National Office of Statistics and Information released in Havana.

As divorces increased in 2013, the State continues to prioritize the rights of care and attention of infants and adolescents, the national media has reported.

The lawyer Jane Manso, stressed that separations generate other problems such as determining which parent will have custody of the children, and which one should pay alimony. In statements to Prensa Latina, Manso explained that whoever has permanent custody of the child must go to court and file a lawsuit with the secretariat to establish the amount of maintenance.

The pension must be paid whether or not the parent is employed. This regulation is also included in the new forms of economic management; therefore, the relevant mechanisms have been enabled, the lawyer explained.

The island is signatory to the International Convention on the Rights of the Child, so the possibility that children be assisted in all processes where they are involved has been created.

Separations are now a major conflict to be addressed in family courts of Havana. The capital has the highest divorce rate of the country, with 4.7 and many separations occur in couples of 15 years and more of legal marriage.
