President of Cuba regrets death of vice president of Malawi

Havana, June 12 (RHC)-- The president of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, today sent his condolences to the people and government of Malawi for the death of the vice president, Saulos Klaus Chilima, his wife and eight other people in a plane crash.

In a message posted on social network X, the Cuban head of state expressed his solidarity with the African nation and, especially, with the family and friends of the Malawian leader, after the tragedy that occurred on Monday.

"We convey heartfelt condolences to the people and government of #Malawi for the tragic death of Vice President Dr. Saulos Klaus Chilima, his wife and 8 other people in an unfortunate plane accident."

The president of Malawi, Lazarus MacCarthy Chakwera, confirmed the day before, the death of Chilima and his companions when the military plane in which they were traveling crashed due to bad weather conditions in a mountainous region of the country.

The African ruler reported in a statement broadcast live on Malawian state television that the wreckage of the plane was located after a search of more than a day among thick forests and mountainous terrain in the northern city of Mzuzu.

Chakwera said in his message that the plane had been completely destroyed and everyone on board died on impact.

According to press reports, the aircraft carrying the vice president of Malawi – 51 years old – and his entourage left the capital, Lilongwe, last Monday at 9:00 (local time) and was due to land in 45 minutes. then at Mzuzu international airport, about 370 kilometers to the north.  (Source: Prensa Latina)
