United Nations System in Cuba raises environmental awareness

Havana, Aug 15 (RHC) The United Nations System in Cuba is committed to raising greater environmental awareness on the impact of climate change with actions involving young people in coastal communities, said an authorized source.

Quoted by the Cuban News Agency (ACN), the agency’s communications officer Raul Garces said that there will be a massive mobilization of

volunteers for collecting garbage and installing baskets on Havana’s eastern beaches this Thursday.

Co-sponsored by the Cuban Association of United Nations (ACNU), the Center for Youth Studies, and several institutions integrated into the system, the initiative foresees cleaning and sanitizing actions of that coastline that contribute to preserving its natural ecosystems, Garces explained.

The organizers stated that the action aims to involve the community in generating greater environmental awareness, the Climate change effect in summer, and the urgency of preserving the beaches from human activity.

The officer noted that the chosen site is near the Guanabo roundabout in the Habana del Este municipality, where participants intend to gather young people to involve them in environmental protection.

The ACN added that actions of this kind are included and defined in a Cuban State’s plan to face climate change, called Tarea Vida (Task Life). (Source: Prensa Latina)
