Anniversary of the disappearance of Camilo Cienfuegos

Havana, 28 October (RHC) Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, through his account on X, today commemorated the revolutionary fighter and leader Camilo Cienfuegos on the 65th anniversary of his physical disappearance.

In a message published on the social network, the President mentioned the tribute paid by the Caribbean nation to the man known as the Hero of Yaguajay, highlighting his patriotism, zeal for justice and absolute loyalty to the Revolution and Fidel Castro.

Díaz-Canel also recalled the words of the historic leader of the Revolution, Fidel Castro, about Camilo Cienfuegos.

"#FidelPorAlways: Camilo came from the people, he had the opportunity to strengthen and develop his extraordinary abilities; but when I see our young people at the foot of a lathe, (...) when I see them in a laboratory, when I see them working 10, 12, 13 and 14 hours, I am more and more confirmed in the profound conviction that in the people there are many Camilos,' he wrote.

For his part, Prime Minister Manuel Marrero stressed that love for Cuba and loyalty to Fidel Castro and the revolution of the hero of Yaguajay are examples for the new generations.

Camilo Cienfuegos (1932-1959) was linked to the Cuban revolutionary process from a young age, as one of the fundamental pillars of the struggle to overthrow the tyranny of Fulgencio Batista.

During the fighting, he was an expeditionary on the yacht Granma, commander of the rebel army and one of the leaders of the invasion of the West.

His friendship with Ernesto Che Guevara made him an inseparable companion of the Cuban-Argentinean guerrilla.

After the triumph of 1 January 1959, he became chief of staff of the rebel army and was responsible for the arrest of the deserter Hubert Matos after an attempted uprising in the central-eastern province of Camagüey.

On his return, the plane in which he was travelling to Havana disappeared in a storm.

In his memory, the Cuban people, especially children, throw flowers into the sea and rivers as a tribute to his life and work.
