Asia-Pacific supports Cuba against US blockade

Havana, 30 October (RHC) Some 70 delegates from 16 countries and 36 organizations from the Asia-Pacific region today issued a declaration in support of Cuba and against the US blockade.

At the end of the 10th Asia-Pacific Regional Meeting in Solidarity with the Island, the participants called for an end to Washington's hostile policy, the lifting of all unilateral sanctions and the removal of the Caribbean nation from the list of state sponsors of terrorism.

Speaking to Prensa Latina, the president of the Cuban Institute for Friendship with Peoples (ICAP), Fernando González, thanked the region for its support and praised the declaration of the event, as well as the action plan of the organizations present for the next two years.

It is a document that has been approved at a time when the United Nations is debating the resolution presented by Cuba on the need to end the blockade, and I believe that in this sense the international commitment to support the island is even more evident,' he said.

In his opinion, the delegates understood the complex circumstances that the country is going through and expressed their willingness to continue to stand with the Caribbean people in defense of their sovereignty in the face of the coercive policies of the United States.

The declaration of the Asia-Pacific solidarity movement highlighted the example of the largest of the Antilles and urged the promotion of cooperative actions between organizations to increase support for the Cuban people in sectors such as health, education and food production.

The document also calls for "promoting the work of friendship in the new generations, as faithful followers of the dreams of internationalism, cooperation and solidarity among peoples, strengthening the role of postgraduate educational institutions in Cuba".

Speaking to Prensa Latina, Peter Weizel, who belongs to the Island Solidarity Movement in Australia, said that the Caribbean nation was a beacon of hope for the Global South.

A unanimous call against the US blockade of Cuba was heard the day before at the UN General Assembly in the voices of dozens of representatives of member states.

The forum of 193 countries will vote on the resolution proposed by the island, which estimates the losses caused by the blockade between March 2023 and 29 February 2024 at 5,56.8 million dollars.

This will be the thirty-second time that the General Assembly will vote on the Cuban draft against this set of measures, which are described in these spaces as nonsense and obsolete. (Source: Prensa Latina)
