Indian union mobilizes against US blockade of Cuba

Havana, 30 October (RHC) The Central Indian Trade Union (CITU) is taking action against the US blockade of Cuba, ahead of today's vote at the United Nations on the need to end this hostile policy.

CITU members have held demonstrations in support of the Cuban people in cities in the states of Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, and a rally will be held in New Delhi this Wednesday to reject the US economic, commercial and financial blockade and the inclusion of the island on the list of alleged state sponsors of terrorism.

In a publication signed with the slogans "Let Cuba live" and "Tear down the blockade", the trade union organization said that the people were mobilizing in support of the island and in condemnation of US imperialism.

It recalled that the international community had voted in favor of Havana's draft resolution on the devastating effects of the US governments' aggression against the Cuban people.

The CITU pointed out that in more than 60 years of blockade, millions of dollars have been lost in all sectors of Cuban society, and that the genocidal policy of former President Donald Trump has been reinforced with more than 220 new coercive measures, which have been continued by the current administration of Joe Biden.

He also pointed to the additional negative impact on Cuba of Washington's designation as an alleged state sponsor of terrorism, such as serious difficulties in financial and banking transactions, foreign trade, sources of income and energy, and access to credit.

In the health sector, he added, this has led to shortages of spare parts for intensive care units and operating theatres, reagents to diagnose immunodeficiency diseases, medicines to treat cancer, and new equipment for neonatal care.

It also noted that food production is being reduced due to shortages of fuel, oils and lubricants needed to operate existing farm machinery, shortages of fertilizer and pesticides, and loss of capacity to cool tons of produce.

CITU claimed that the economic siege was responsible for the severe energy crisis that Cuba has recently suffered.

Finally, it pointed out that the declared aim of the blockade is to starve the Cuban people and force them to rise up against their authorities.

Although this sinister objective has been frustrated, the endless difficulties faced by Cuba have left the country with a serious shortage of all the necessities of daily life, he stressed. (Source: Prensa Latina)
