Cuban authorities congratulate Havana on its 505th anniversary

Havana, November 16 (RHC)-- The First Secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba (CCPCC), and President of the Republic, Miguel Díaz-Canel congratulated this Saturday the country's capital on the occasion of the celebration of the 505th anniversary of the village of San Cristóbal de La Habana.

In his account in X, the dignitary showed his confidence in the recovery of the city affected by Hurricane Rafael, last November 6th.

“For you, to see closed the wounds left by the hurricane and those opened by the relentless weather, we will work without rest, every day, standing and fighting,” he emphasized.

On the same social network, the president of the National Assembly of People's Power and the Council of State, Esteban Lazo Hernández, also congratulated the city and described it as an emblematic town of history, culture and traditions.

“Working tirelessly in the recovery after the hurricane and for a more beautiful city every day will be the best tribute,” he added.

In X, the member of the Political Bureau and Secretary of Organization of the CCPCC, Roberto Morales Ojeda, also paid tribute to the capital and recalled the historian Eusebio Leal (1942-2020), who dedicated his life to its care and restoration.

Tradition recognizes the date of foundation as November 16, 1519, when the Spanish conqueror Diego Velázquez, on behalf of the kings of Spain, established its third and definitive settlement.

According to the National Statistics Office (ONE), the province of Havana has 49 neighborhoods, 329 districts and 36 population settlements, for a total of 414 officially recognized spatial units or localities.

In 1982, its historic center, Old Havana, was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and in 2014 Havana was chosen as one of the Seven Wonder Cities of the World for representing the global diversity of urban society.     (Source: ACN)
