Tierra Cuba belongs to BioCuba Café, the first joint venture of the Cuban Agroforestry System and the Italian coffee-roasting company Lavazza
Havana, Nov 30 (RHC) Tierra Cuba, sustainable and high-quality coffee produced by farmers from the island’s easternmost province of Guantánamo, will be marketed in 2025 in the cafeterias of the Schiphol airport in the Netherlands, as announced during the Biocuba theoretical event, which was part of the Chocolate with Coffee Festival.
This coffee belongs to BioCuba Café, the first joint venture of the Cuban Agroforestry System and the Italian coffee-roasting company Lavazza.
On its part, Schiphol Airport is a major transportation hub, receiving over 71 million passengers annually and ranking third in Europe in terms of traffic.
Joris Werring, director of gastronomic projects at Amsterdam Schiphol Airport, explained that the selection of the product was based on its quality, the strategic partnership with Lavazza, and the history of Cuban organic coffee.
The airport aims to achieve sustainability by 2030, and the introduction of organic products is highly desired. The essence of Tierra Cuba aligns with the airport's goals, and Werring emphasized that Cuban coffee can already be enjoyed at Schiphol Airport on a trial basis, with the full implementation planned for all 17 cafeterias. The response from customers has been enthusiastic, and they are eager to expedite the process.
Tierra Cuba is one of Lavazza's Premium coffees, a leading brand worldwide and the first non-transnational at that level. Lavazza, founded in 1895 in Turin, is a global coffee company that produces a wide range of coffee products.
Michelle Curto, the president of Biocubacafé, explained that Lavazza has a family of products called Tierra, dedicated to mono-origin or multi-origin coffee, with a focus on high quality and sustainability. Tierra Cuba is the highest-level product in this family, almost like a separate brand.
Tierra Cuba consists of Arabica and robusta coffee from 14 municipalities in the provinces of Granma, Santiago de Cuba, and Guantánamo. The robusta used is fermented, a natural process that is enhanced with scientific techniques.
Regarding BioCuba Café, which produces certified organic coffee without chemical additives, its president emphasized that it was created to provide coffee to both Cubans and the world.
Curto also announced that a state-of-the-art coffee-roasting company is being installed in the country, which will ensure the production of the desired beverage for domestic consumption. (Source: ACN)
