Cuba celebrates International Human Rights Day

Havana, Dec 10 (RHC) The civil society of Cuba celebrates today the International Human Rights Day and reaffirms progress in this area, 76 years after the Universal Declaration of these principles.

The Cuba Pavilion in the capital will serve as the focal point for discussions among activists from various social organizations on the island, who advocate for and safeguard human rights for all, rather than as exclusive privileges for the elite.

Despite the tough economic scenario and the pressures of the United States government and its blockade policy, the country is strengthening its legal framework and guaranteeing the full exercise of these essential principles.

Cuban civil society officials and actors assure that the country endorses in its Constitution the search for the greatest social justice for all, and identifies human dignity as a fundamental right and premise in the construction of its system.

According to the Cuban perspective, Human Rights are not limited to the defense of political and civil rights, but also economic, social and cultural rights seen in their universality and integrality, including the right to development, peace, and life.

In 2023, the nation was elected a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council for the sixth time, which is consistent with the Caribbean country's performance in this area.

Likewise, the Caribbean island has an extensive history of cooperation with all human rights mechanisms that are applied on a universal and non-discriminatory basis.

The country is also recognized for its advances in child and adolescent care, the strength of its health system, with universal and free coverage, as well as its contributions as a State party to 44 international treaties on the subject. (Source: Prensa Latina)
